AI CCTV that knows a person from a fox.
Basic motion detection reacts to any change in the picture: headlights, rain, branches, wildlife. Axis cameras run AI on the camera itself, so they alert on people and vehicles, count them and make footage quick to search.

Motion detection vs AI
Why basic motion detection cries wolf.
Traditional motion detection compares pixels. Headlights, swaying trees, rain and animals all change the picture, so alarms can go off all night and people learn to ignore them. Axis cameras with a deep learning processing unit classify what they see as a person or a vehicle before raising an alarm.
Axis itself recommends simple motion detection only for small, low-traffic, non-critical areas. Everywhere else we use AXIS Object Analytics, which comes preinstalled on compatible cameras at no extra cost.
What it can do
What Axis analytics do on the camera.
| Analytic | What it does | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| AXIS Object Analytics | Detects, classifies, tracks and counts people and vehicles. Alerts on line crossing, loitering, occupancy and tailgating. | Preinstalled at no extra cost |
| AXIS Image Health Analytics | Alerts when a view is blocked, moved, blurred or too dark. | Preinstalled at no extra cost |
| AXIS Audio Analytics | Detects breaking glass, screams and shouting without recording audio. | Included at no extra cost |
| AXIS Live Privacy Shield | Masks people, faces or number plates in live and recorded video. | Licence-free on the newest cameras |
| AXIS Scene Metadata | Describes each person or vehicle (type, colours, speed, plate) so footage can be searched. | Built into AXIS OS |
| AXIS License Plate Verifier | Reads number plates and opens barriers. See ANPR cameras. | Licence per camera |
| AXIS Perimeter Defender | Long-range intrusion detection for fences and perimeters, designed for Axis thermal cameras. | Licence per camera |
Radar
Radar for the places cameras struggle.
Radar isn’t fooled by shadows, light beams, raindrops or insects, and it works in total darkness. Paired with a 180° camera, Axis radar detects people at up to 60 m and vehicles at up to 85 m with no blind spots, and can point a PTZ camera at what it finds.
Search
Find the van, not hours of footage.
Because the camera describes what it sees, you can search recordings for a white van or a person in a red top instead of scrubbing through the night. AXIS Camera Station Pro adds smart search, including similarity search.
Secure by design
Smart cameras need smart security.
An AI camera is a computer on your network. Axis builds a security chip into its cameras, signs its software and publishes how long each model will get updates. We keep cameras patched and on their own network segment with the rest of your IT. See cyber-secure CCTV.
