ANPR · Number plate recognition · Car parks

ANPR cameras that open the gate for the right vehicles.

Axis number plate recognition reads each plate on the camera itself, checks it against your lists and opens the barrier for the vehicles you expect. Installed on your network and supported by the same team that runs your IT.

  • On cameraplates are read inside the camera, with no separate ANPR server
  • 200 km/htop speed for plate capture on the AXIS Q1686-DLE
  • ±2 km/hspeed accuracy with Axis radar

What it does

Number plate recognition, built into the camera.

  • Reads plates on the camera and checks them against allow and block lists.
  • Opens barriers and gates for listed vehicles, from the camera itself or through an Axis door controller.
  • Flags vehicles on a block list as soon as they arrive.
  • Logs vehicle type, colour and make with each plate, so a vehicle can be found later.
  • Turns the plate into an access credential, alongside cards, PINs and phones, in AXIS Camera Station Secure Entry.

Typical sites are staff and visitor car parks, yard and depot gates, and private roads. For doors and barriers across the whole site, see access control.

Speed

Plates and speeds on faster roads.

On site roads and private estates, Axis radar measures each vehicle’s speed to within 2 km/h. AXIS Speed Monitor shows speeds of up to 200 km/h on the live view, exports the readings as a spreadsheet and can drive a speed sign. The AXIS Q1686-DLE puts radar and camera in one housing and captures a plate and a speed for each vehicle at up to 200 km/h.

Why Axis

What to ask before you buy a cheaper ANPR camera.

AskWhy it mattersWith Axis
Where are plates read?A camera that only sends video needs a separate server to read plates.AXIS License Plate Verifier reads them on the camera.
What else is logged?A plate alone is hard to search if it is dirty, false or obscured.Vehicle type, colour and make are logged with each plate.
How long will it get security updates?A camera at the gate is a networked computer facing the road.Typically 8 to 12 years, with the end date published for each model.
Can you prove a recording is genuine?Evidence of a vehicle on site may be challenged.Signed video shows a recording has not been edited since the camera made it.

Number plates can identify people, so ANPR needs a clear purpose, signage and a set retention period under UK GDPR and ICO guidance.

Secure by design

A camera at the gate shouldn’t be a way into your network.

Axis Edge Vault, the security chip in Axis cameras, checks the software at start-up and keeps encryption keys in protected hardware. We put ANPR cameras on their own network segment and keep their firmware patched with the rest of your IT. Read more about cyber-secure CCTV.

How it works

From survey to a working barrier.

  1. 01

    Survey

We look at where vehicles approach and stop, the lighting, and how gates and barriers are controlled today.

  2. 02

    Design

Camera positions, vehicle lists, barrier connections and network design, with a fixed price.

  3. 03

    Install

Cameras, cabling and barrier connections installed and tested by our own engineers.

  4. 04

    Support

Firmware updates, list changes and health monitoring from the same team afterwards.

ANPR questions

What people ask before switching.

What is ANPR?
Automatic number plate recognition. A camera reads each vehicle’s registration and checks it against lists, so it can open a barrier, raise an alert or log the visit.
Can ANPR open our barrier or gate?
Yes. Axis ANPR opens barriers and gates for vehicles on your allow list, from the camera or through an Axis door controller, and flags vehicles on a block list.
Do ANPR cameras need a server?
Not to read plates. AXIS License Plate Verifier runs on the camera itself. Video still needs recording, either to an SD card in the camera or to an Axis recorder.
Is ANPR allowed under GDPR?
It can be, with a clear purpose. Number plates can identify people, so you need signage, a set retention period and a lawful reason for collecting them, in line with ICO guidance.
Can ANPR also measure speed?
Yes, with Axis radar. Speeds are measured to within 2 km/h, and the AXIS Q1686-DLE captures a plate and a speed for each vehicle at up to 200 km/h.
